Construction on the North 2nd Street bridge between Columbine Ave and Canal Ave will begin on January 25, 2022. This project requires a complete closure of North 2nd Street between Columbine and Canal as well as related intersections in that area. Area residents and travelers to/from Roosevelt High School will be impacted by this closure.
Johnstown, CO – January 21, 2022 – Construction work will begin on the North 2nd Street bridge between Columbine Ave and Canal Ave on January 25, 2022. This work, which will widen the existing bridge that crosses the Hillsborough Ditch, will create a safer and more reliable route for pedestrians and vehicles on North 2nd Street. In the past, the North 2nd Street bridge has been a very unsafe squeeze point for traffic to and from Roosevelt High School and has been the culprit of a number of traffic issues.
The work that will begin on Tuesday will completely close the bridge and the surrounding intersections of South Columbine/North 2nd, North Columbine/North 2nd, and Canal/North 2nd to all traffic. This closure is expected to last until mid-April (weather permitting). Residents began to see signage regarding the closure, detours, and upcoming work on January 14.
Travelers are encouraged to use North Greeley Ave and North Fremont Ave to/from Charlotte Street while the bridge is closed to traffic. Those who regularly travel off of CR17 to North 2nd Street, should instead use Raymond Ave to connect to Charlotte Street to move west into Old Town Johnstown. All travelers should use caution as they navigate new routes, especially through the school zone.
Area emergency responders and the Weld RE5J school district have been informed of this work and the Town continues to work closely with area organizations to make sure that emergency services are prioritized and bus transportation for students is considered. Thank you for your patience and understanding as the Town works to provide a safer and more pedestrian friendly route along this highly traveled road.
