The Johnstown Reservoir Dam needs repairs to its outfall structure. Work on this project will begin in September 2021 and is estimated to be completed and reopened to the public Summer 2022. During this project, the trail around the lake will be closed for pedestrian use intermittently. Please see the Town's website and posted signage at the reservoir for more information as closures occur.

The project will be completed in 2 phases.
Phase 1 - Reservoir Component, repairing dam infrastructure
Phase 2 - Work to armor the reservoir bank

June 2022 Update - This project is complete, including the work on the walking path surrounding the reservoir. Residents are welcome to fish and recreate in the area again. While the project is complete, the Town is still working with Colorado Parks and Wildlife in an effort to continue to add fishing resources to the reservoir. At this time, the CPW stock report is the best resource for stocking information.

May 2022 Update - The reservoir is full of water AND fishable trout according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Residents are welcome to fish in the reservoir (with a Colorado fishing license and Town fishing license) as long as they follow the fishing guidelines. The Town continues to work with State and local resources to bring other types of fish in to stock the reservoir but no additional types are available at this time. There will still be some closures of the walking path around the reservoir moving into June as Town crews work on creating a better pedestrian experience.

April 2022 Update - The Johnstown Reservoir should be completely filled with water by the first week of May. This does NOT include fish as the Town worked with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) last year to empty the reservoir of wild life prior to draining to preserve whatever resources were able to be saved. The Town continues to work with CPW on the reintroduction of fish to the reservoir and will let residents know when fishing can resume later this summer. Outside of water and fish restocking, the reservoir continues to have some construction work on the path surrounding it. Teams will continue to work on the surrounding path to grade it (even it out) before laying better walking material on top.

March 2022 Update - The outfall structure has been completed and work to fill in the dam is currently ongoing. The Utilities Department anticipates filling the reservoir with water end of April/early May. Starting in April and into May, work will also be done to even out the walking path around the reservoir. This path will then be resurfaced for a safer and better pedestrian experience.

February 2022 Update - The outfall structure (tower) of the dam will be completed by the end of this month.

January 2022 Update - The Johnstown Reservoir will remain empty for the coming months and residents will notice an increase in construction workers in the area as the work on the dam proceeds. In January, the contractor constructed the pipe encasement and was able to form and pour the structure. Pipe supports and outlet pipe were also installed in January.

December 2021 Update - Work on the Johnstown Reservoir Dam has begun, starting construction with the outfall structure of the dam. There will continue to be intermittent closures of the walking path around the dam.

November 2021 Update - The Colorado Department of Natural Resources (DNR) completed a fish removal and relocation at the end of November to protect the resource. The reservoir has been completely drained and will need to dry out prior to any work beginning on dam infrastructure repairs. Work is expected to begin in December with some parts of the reservoir trail closed to pedestrians at times during the work.

October 2021 Update - The Colorado Department of Natural Resources called for an emergency Pubic Fish Salvage to last from October 6, 2021 to November 1, 2021. The fish salvage has been enacted so the Town of Johnstown can completely drain the reservoir to allow for planned needed repairs to be made on the dam. Because the entire fishery may have been lost, CPW enacted the public fish salvage in order to optimize use of the resource. The dam will be drained by the end of November and repair work will begin.
