On July 18, Town Council passed a resolution implementing Level 2 outdoor water restrictions, requiring that homes limit outdoor watering to every other day based on house number. Additionally, homes will be tasked with watering either in the morning from 12am-10am or in the evening from 6pm-11:59pm. The goal of this watering schedule is not to prevent irrigation, but to be more purposeful with the demand on water so that the water tanks have time to refill for continued use for the entire community.

Johnstown, CO – July 19, 2022 – With extreme temperatures this summer, there has been an increase in water demand, likely a result of the interest in maintaining personal and local greenspace around Town. This increase has the Town’s potable (treated for drinking) water capacity operating at a daily flow rate of 5.6 million gallons per day, putting notable stress on a system that has a total capacity of 6.2 million gallons per day; a capacity which is generally more than enough to meet standard daily summer flow rates of around 4.5 million gallons per day. The goal of this watering schedule is not to prevent irrigation, but to be more purposeful with the demand on water so that the water tanks have time to refill for continued use for the entire community. Town Council, during Monday’s Town Council Meeting, opted to pass this compulsory resolution regarding outdoor watering because it calls for residents and businesses to water responsibly and act considerately for fellow Townsfolk.

As a result of the stress on the system, and a prioritizing of indoor water accessibility for residents and businesses, a new outdoor watering schedule is effective immediately. Outdoor watering restrictions by way of scheduling, give the Town’s water system the opportunity to even out the demand for water. The schedule would require that outdoor watering for ODD NUMBERED HOMES (ending in 1,3,5,7,9) occur on MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, and FRIDAY while outdoor watering for EVEN NUMBERED HOMES (ending in 0,2,4,6,8) occur on TUESDAY, THURSDAY, and SATURDAY. No watering will occur on Sunday. Furthermore, outdoor watering should occur during the morning hours of 12am-10am or the evening hours of 6pm-11:59pm. Watering should not occur from 10am-6pm on any day of the week.

Ex: Jamie lives on 460 Town Lane. As a resident of an even numbered home she will water her yard in the morning or in the evening, either from 12am-10am or from 6pm-11:59pm on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

As of today, the Town is also doing its part to lessen the demand on the watering system, changing its watering of Town parks and greenery that use potable water to align with the new schedule, as well as communicating with HOAs and other commercial properties in Town on potable water about the new watering schedule.

While a water schedule is necessary this summer, the Town has water infrastructure projects currently in the works that address water capacity. The south water tower currently under construction just south of Pioneer Ridge is one example of an infrastructure project, along with the water treatment plant expansion and upsizing of the raw water trunkline from the Town’s ditch supply.

The watering schedule, information about non-potable water, resources for conserving water and developing more resilient grass, and more are available on the Town’s website at johnstown.colorado.gov/SummerWater2022.
