The contract with the Town’s current waste service provider (Waste Management) ends on September 1, 2021 and after processing a Request for Proposals this summer, the Town has decided to contract with Waste Connections for future garbage and recycling services. All households can expect garbage and recycling pickup to continue on Mondays with Waste Connections.

Johnstown, CO – August 10, 2021 – The Town of Johnstown will be partnering with a new garbage and recycling service provider, Waste Connections, starting in September. This change comes at the end of the current 5 year contract with Waste Management. Johnstown staff and Town Council opted for a change in provider at the completion of the contract after assessing the responses to a Request for Proposal between May-July. “The Town’s goal is to provide Johnstown residents with good prices, comprehensive service, and close-to-home customer care,” said Johnstown Mayor, Gary Lebsack.

Garbage and recycling service will continue on MONDAY for the entire Town with weekly trash pickup and every other week recycling pickup. *Previously Thompson Crossing and Thompson River Ranch homes were scheduled to be serviced on Wednesday, however Waste Connections was able to move a few trucks around to accommodate the convenient Monday-only pickup for the Town*. Waste Connections first day of service will be on Tuesday, September 7 (as Monday, September 6 is a holiday) and Waste Management’s last day of service will be on Monday, August 30.

Part of the change from Waste Management to Waste Connections will be a change-out of the garbage and recycling totes, as Waste Connections and Waste Management do not use the same totes. Waste Connections garbage and recycling totes are blue and will be delivered to households between August 16-26. All households in the Town will receive a 96 gallon trash and 96 gallon recycling tote, unless the household is currently set up with a 64 gallon trash. Waste Management will be picking up their green totes starting August 30 through September 8. The Town is currently working with subdivisions and HOAs to inform them about the tote pickup process which will likely include extra totes sitting outside of homes for a day or a few days.

For a flat rate of $14.50/month residents will have use of both the 96 gallon garbage and 96 recycling totes or $12.50/month for a 64 gallon trash and a 96 gallon recycling. In addition to securing a competitive rate for garbage and recycling bundles, the Town has also locked these rates in for the next 5 years, meaning no increase. There is some flexibility in the garbage and recycling bundle options but residents are asked to wait until after September 7 to request a change of service.

The Town is excited to introduce a single stream recycling service for Johnstown households. “Residents have made it clear that the option to recycle is important, so the Town wanted to select the company which included recycling for the best price and the most comprehensive service,” said Mayor Gary Lebsack. “We are working hard to meet the needs and wants of our current residents, and the expiration of the current contract gave us the chance to dig into other opportunities.” The Town encourages residents to give recycling a try. Recycling not only reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, it also conserves natural resources and means that there is less waste in your trash container.

Residents who currently have Waste Management service with the Town of Johnstown do not need to worry about canceling service, your regular service will automatically move to our new service provider and your extra Waste Management services will be cancelled after August 30. If you are a resident who paid extra for recycling service, this service is now built into the offered Town service and you will not need to secure recycling service as an extra with Waste Connections. If you have any questions about your extra Waste Management services that are expiring in August, please call Waste Management.
