Up to Par – Johnstown’s New Pioneer Ridge Disc Golf Course

The Town of Johnstown and the Pioneer Ridge Disc Golf Club are excited to announce the opening of the new Pioneer Ridge Disc Golf Course for June 5, 2021. 

Johnstown, CO – May 25, 2021 – Johnstown’s Pioneer Ridge Park, just west of Pioneer Ridge Elementary School, is soon to have an awesome new feature – a disc golf course! Throughout the month of May, the Pioneer Ridge Disc Golf Club (PRDGC), with support from the Town of Johnstown, worked hard to order, map out and install the disc golf baskets throughout the park. The new park feature will officially be open starting June 5. This will be the second disc golf course in the Town of Johnstown; a regulation course also exists in River Ranch just north of CR18.

The course at Pioneer Ridge Park is a beginner-level course with 9 holes no more than 350 feet long. Game play on the Pioneer Ridge Disc Golf course is also peppered with signage that gives players the opportunity to see the upcoming hole by accessing a video on the park’s webpage. Perfect for families or first-time players, this disc golf course was planned out by PRDGC with family as the focus. The course itself snakes around the outside edge of the park, leaving the large grassy field area of the park available for use and play even while discs are flying.

Jaric Schumann (student and member of Pioneer Ridge Disc Golf Club):  "I like disc golf because I can get a lot of exercise and I can try to get the least points and win. Also, I get to play with my friends and throw a disc around,” said student and member of Pioneer Ridge Disc Golf Jaric Schumann. Another student member, Kaydence Walkinshaw added, "It is really fun competing with family. I like disc golf because we yell and go crazy when we make it!"

Co-founder of the Pioneer Ridge Disc Golf Club, Zach Boettcher, wanted to introduce the sport to students in the hopes that it would give them another activity that involves spending time with their families and is seeing the fruit of that labor by working with the Town and having this course installed. 
“As support grew, the opportunity to put in this new course came alive with grant funds from Weld RE-5J School District and cooperation from the Town of Johnstown using Pioneer Ridge Park.  We look forward to seeing people of all ages using this course and spending quality time with friends and family,” said Zach Boettcher. 

Residents of Johnstown are welcome to continue to use the Pioneer Ridge Park as usual, including this new park feature. Like all parks in the Town of Johnstown, general park hours are from 5am-10pm and all park users are reminded to keep this shared space clean and clear of garbage and refuse.

PIONEER RIDGE DISC GOLF CLUB
The Pioneer Ridge Disc Golf Club (PRDGC), located out of Pioneer Ridge Elementary School in Johnstown Colorado was founded in 2021 with the purpose of providing students with an alternative sports opportunity that involves friends and family. The PRDGC, with support of the Weld RE5J school district, primarily plays disc golf out of the Pioneer Ridge area while occasionally visiting courses in Northern Colorado. All 4th grade students who attend Pioneer Ridge Elementary School are welcome to join the disc golf club – expansion of the club to other grades is coming soon.
